This series depicts three broken images. This theme is reflected by digital and conceptual elements in each photo. The first photo depicts a city landscape upside down in free fall. The second photo captures national conflict, questioning the instability of American identity, facing a human subject with a looming American flag. The final image is a confrontation with a crossroad, capturing a railroad sign and its surrounding landscape. This series builds on the skills I developed during my image layering study, showcasing how those skills can service a less abstract piece.
These pieces of abstracted photograph were created while I explored how an image’s color data can be manipulated to create varying levels of abstraction. I learned about the math behind various layering techniques and operations like blurs affect the color data of an image. I continue to use what I learned from this experience in my work while making 3D rendering textures and my own photography practice. This study culminated in the diamond skyline piece depicted below.
