Artist Book, Spring 2023

This piece is an artist book exploring my complex feelings surrounding the idea of home after growing up in Florida’s Deep South. The book takes the visage of a wooden shelf having a front and back. The front showcases photos from my family home, captured to give the impression of homeyness and nostalgia. Meanwhile, the back represents the unseen and suppressed elements of Southern culture and history. The book’s cover pages when closed depict a nested bird in a birdcage, as both an adolescent and adult, and like a cage the book has a hinge allowing it to be closed and opened. Also included are images documenting the piece’s design process.

Collage Series, Spring 2023

A series of two collages using a combination of E-waste in addition to pulp media, including magazines and comic books. The pieces examine discarded objects of entertainment, stripping them apart and leaving only their raw elements.

Titan Map, Spring 2023

This piece is inspired by images from NASA’s Cassini mission, taken of Saturn’s moon Titan. The piece appropriates these images while exploring a series of shapes transforming into a representation of the planet. These shapes explore different forms of symmetry and were designed using a combination of digital programs including Blender and Adobe Illustrate. On the right side of the series the shape depicts an abstract representation of the Greek myth of Prometheus, while the shapes on the left take from the myth of Pandora. Each imbues the map with a sense of danger, warning, and temptation.

Saturn Laser Cut Relief, Fall 2022

This piece is a recreation of the masterwork Saturn Devouring his son by Francisco de Goya. It was created with a laser cutter by breaking the painting down into layers and creating an SVG for each layer using Adobe Illustrator. The resulting piece is similar to a relief sculpture, adding depth to the piece that make the shadows and highlights more pronounced.

Goblin Mode Radial Symmetry, Spring 2023

This piece is an exploration of the term “Goblin Mode,” which had been named Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year for 2022. The piece was designed to be a single contiguous shape that could be displayed in a radial pattern. The piece was designed using a combination of pencil and paper and digital art and can be seen rendered in both forms. Also included are the various designs created during the design evolution of the piece that were combined in the final product.
